The Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) launched a new AI initiative specifically targeting public health agencies, reported by Fierce Healthcare (article 8). The initiative, referred to in context as the PULSE program, aims to provide public health departments with frameworks, tools, and standards for responsibly deploying AI in population health surveillance, outbreak response, and health equity monitoring.

CHAI's public health focus represents an expansion from its primary work on clinical AI governance and evaluation standards. Public health agencies have historically lagged behind hospital systems in AI adoption due to funding constraints, fragmented data infrastructure, and workforce limitations.

The initiative aligns with parallel efforts from UN agencies, which launched joint strategic guidelines for AI in health (article 12), and with MedCity News coverage of building AI-ready public health data systems (article 61). Together these developments signal a coordinated push to extend AI governance frameworks beyond acute care settings into population health infrastructure.
