AI-Enabled Cardiovascular Devices — FDA Authorization Landscape
OVERVIEWContent
Overview
AI-enabled cardiovascular devices represent one of the largest and most mature categories of FDA-authorized AI medical devices, with a substantial body of authorized tools for ECG analysis, imaging interpretation, and risk stratification.
JACC Analysis
The Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) published an analysis of FDA-approved AI and machine learning-enabled cardiovascular devices (article 43), providing a systematic review of the authorization landscape. The analysis characterizes the types of cardiovascular applications that have received FDA authorization, the evidence bases supporting those authorizations, and gaps in the current landscape.
Context
Cardiovascular AI devices have been among the first to achieve FDA authorization at scale, making cardiology a leading indicator for how AI device regulation evolves in other specialties. Lessons from the cardiovascular authorization landscape inform regulatory approaches for newer AI device categories including oncology imaging, neurological assessment, and agentic clinical AI.
