Med-PaLM and Med-PaLM 2 — Google's Medical Large Language Models
ENTITYContent
Overview
Med-PaLM is a large language model (LLM) developed by Google Research, designed to provide high-quality answers to medical questions. It was the first AI system to surpass the pass mark (>60%) on U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)-style questions, with the original version preprinted in late 2022 and published in Nature in July 2023.
Med-PaLM 2
Med-PaLM 2, introduced at Google Health's annual event "The Check Up" in March 2023, was the first AI system to reach human expert level on USMLE-style questions. It achieved 86.5% accuracy on the MedQA medical exam benchmark in research. According to physician evaluations, its long-form answers to consumer medical questions improved substantially over the original version. Med-PaLM 2 is one of the research models powering MedLM — a family of foundation models fine-tuned for the healthcare industry, available to Google Cloud customers.
Multimodal Extension
Google has introduced Med-PaLM M, a multimodal version of Med-PaLM, reflecting the inherently multimodal nature of medicine. Research continues on techniques to build medical AI systems integrating information from a wide range of data modalities.
MedLM Availability
MedLM is available to Google Cloud customers and supports a range of applications from basic tasks to complex clinical workflows, positioning it as a foundation model platform for enterprise healthcare AI deployment.
