On-sensor AI processes data directly at the sensor level — on the device itself — rather than transmitting raw data to the cloud for analysis. Healthcare Applications
In healthcare, on-sensor AI enables continuous monitoring with immediate local inference: detecting arrhythmias, falls, respiratory events, or glucose fluctuations without cloud latency. The edge processing model also reduces privacy exposure by minimizing the transmission of raw physiological data, addressing some HIPAA compliance concerns inherent in cloud-based health monitoring.
Technical and Regulatory Considerations
On-sensor AI devices that make clinical decisions or provide clinical information will require FDA regulatory engagement as AI-enabled medical devices. The Syntiant NDP (Neural Decision Processor) architecture enables low-power, always-on inference — a key requirement for battery-powered wearable medical devices.
